Debt -
The wisest man who ever lived apart from Jesus was a king called Solomon. Talking about debt he said, “the borrower is the slave of the lender” (Proverbs 22.7). That makes our country one full of slaves! Are you one already, or considering becoming one?

Let’s assume then that you’ve taken that all-important step – that you’ve turned away from the darkness of sin to the light of obeying God; from hell to heaven; from Satan to the Lord Jesus. How can you put into practice the commandment “to owe no-one anything”?
•   Firstly, be clear in your own mind about the difference between what you need, and what you merely want? Is the item you’re thinking about going into debt for really something you need?

•   Secondly, if you cant afford to pay for something now, don’t buy it. Wait till you can afford it! We don’t have a “right” to a holiday in Spain, the latest mobile phone or Play Station. Christians are people who can wait……..

•   Thirdly, take time to work out just how much you’ll have paid over and above the actual price, in interest payments before that item you’re going into debt for, actually gets paid for. You’ll be horrified!

•   Fourthly, put in place immediately a plan for re-paying your debts in an organised way as soon as possible. Get out of the debt trap!

•   Fifthly, keep in mind the dangers of possessing. The more you have, the more you’ve got to worry about …. and worrying eats away at our relationship to God. The Bible says that just as we entered the world with nothing, so we’ll exit it with nothing, and that having too much has led to the eternal shipwreck of many so-called “Christians”.

•  Finally, ask God to make you content with what you’ve got. A Christian doesn’t have to be a slave to the standards of the society in which he lives. You don’t have to have a newer car, a bigger house, a plasma TV screen, a more powerful PC. The Bible says, if we have food and clothing we should be content with that. Anything extra puts us according to God’s Word, among the wealthy!
We need to know that one day soon, this modern “Babylon” of a world built on credit or debt is going to collapse. God has already sent us some clear warning signs of this. Make sure from today that you’ll be among the survivors, and not the victims!
